In my Group Coaching Program, "The Shift to Limitless Business Growth" a common theme kept emerging during our first call. Many business owners express that they feel they should be further along in their careers or businesses. This feeling is present regardless of the type of business they have or their background. It’s a sentiment that seems to bug many entrepreneurs and business owners, and possibly it’s effecting you???
The Importance of Defining Success
If we are unable to define success for ourselves, how can we put a destination into our GPS and aim for "our" success? Success is a personal concept that each one of us defines differently. We all have an image in our minds of what success should look like. However, when I ask the question, "What does success mean to you?" the answers can rarely be easily answered. The Hard Questions
Even after expressing that they should be more successful than they currently are, many business owners struggle to define what success means to them. When I ask, "What would need to be present for you to feel successful?" the response is often, "That’s a hard question to answer." This highlights a critical issue: how can you know you are "successful" if you are unsure what success even is or what needs to be present for you to "feel" successful?
Bringing Awareness Back to You
I encourage you to bring awareness back to yourself. Clearly define what success means to you personally. What needs to be present for you to "feel" successful? Remember "What’s not tracked, can’t be measured." Without a clear definition of success, it’s challenging to recognize your achievements or know when you’ve reached your goals. Perception vs. Reality
I want to share a story from a business retreat I attended. While sitting in VIP, I met a vibrant and caring girl who seemed incredibly successful. She created amazing content, had a large following, and knew how to gain even more followers. However, when we talked, I discovered that her highest income month was half of my lowest income month. By both her standards and mine, I was more successful. This story illustrates that things aren't always what they seem from the outside looking in.
Your Personal Journey to Success
When defining your version of success, make sure you aren’t basing it on someone else’s journey. Just because someone appears successful on the outside doesn’t mean their journey aligns with your definition of success. Make sure to define success for yourself and become clear on what it looks like for YOU. Download the Defining Success Workbook Here
Practical Steps to Define Success
Reflect on Your Values: What are the core values that drive you in your business and personal life?
Set Specific Goals: Define clear, measurable goals that align with your values and vision of success. These goals should be both short-term and long-term.
Track Your Progress: Regularly track your progress towards these goals. Use tools and data that make sense for your business and Dream life
Celebrate Often: Acknowledge and celebrate your achievements, no matter how small. This helps reinforce your progress and keeps you motivated. Your brain loves to be rewarded
Stay Flexible: Be open to refining your definition of success as you grow and evolve. Your vision of success may change over time, and that’s perfectly okay
Conclusion
Success is a deeply personal journey. By taking the time to define what success means to you and identifying what needs to be present for you to feel successful, you set yourself up for a more fulfilling and rewarding journey. Don’t get caught up in comparing your path to others. Focus on your own goals and values, and let them guide you towards your unique vision of success.
